Key takeaways

Nutrition supports overall health
Good nutrition strengthens bones and muscles, boosts immunity, supports cognitive function, and helps manage chronic conditions.

A balanced diet is essential
Eating a mix of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats helps older adults maintain energy, function, and overall wellbeing.

Hydration is crucial
Staying well‑hydrated supports digestion, nutrient absorption, mental clarity, and general wellness, especially as natural thirst cues decline with age.

Home Care Packages can fund nutrition support
Home Care Package funding can be used for dietitian consultations, assisted meal preparation, and subsidised delivered meals, which are typically covered at up to 70%.

Supplements require clinical approval
Nutritional supplements usually aren’t covered unless they are prescribed or recommended by a qualified health professional.

Overview

Yet, the importance of diet also extends beyond physical health. Sharing meals with family or friends, exploring new recipes, or simply enjoying a favourite dish can bring immense joy and enhance mental well-being.

Making informed dietary choices can profoundly impact quality of life. Consulting with a Dietician or Nutritionist to tailor a diet that meets individual health needs and preferences can make all the difference, turning each meal into an opportunity for nourishment and enjoyment.

What kind of nutrition-focused services can I access?

Home Care Package funds can be used on a range of services to support good nutrition, including:

  • Consultations with a Dietician or Nutritionist: we recommend that all Home Care Package clients take the opportunity to arrange an assessment or review with a Dietician to ensure your dietary needs are well met.

  • Assisted food preparation: getting a care worker to assist with preparing food and cleaning up, while you participate as much or as little as you like.

  • Pre-prepared meals: Home Care Package funds can be used to subsidise nutritious, pre-prepared meals. Aunty Grace partners with a wide range of meal providers that cater to different cultural and dietary needs. By convention, funds can only be used to cover 70% of the cost for these meals.

  • Nutritional Supplements: in general, nutritional supplements are not covered by HCP funds, however there are some supplements that ca be subsidised if prescribed by a Dietician or similar Health Professional.

If you’re interested in hearing more about optimal nutrition, or in accessing any of the services above, please get in touch with your Care Partner to discuss.
